Our creative arts programmes prepare students for a competitive industry through real-world client briefs and professional experiences, including:

What is DofE? 

DofE is about developing transferable skills from teamwork to communication to empower and challenge young people, impacting positively on their local communities. 

Here at The Sixth Form College Farnborough we will support the Expeditions and provide advice on the other sections, but students are responsible for organising their skills, volunteering, physical and (for the Gold Award) residential sections. The DofE award is optional and you have until your 25th Birthday to complete all sections of the award you are working towards. 

How does DofE work at College? 

DofE is added as a weekly timetabled session so it is important that you sign up at Enrolment. Timetables are created at the start of the academic year so there is a high chance that it won’t be possible to add DofE after you have enrolled if you change your mind so it is important that if you do want to take part with us you sign up. 

Your weekly sessions are compulsory and contribute to your overall attendance record, however roughly half of the sessions are used throughout the year and where they are not used for DofE they are available as extra study periods.

To register for DofE at College: 

You need to select DofE on the enrichment page when you complete your College enrolment, which takes place after you get your GCSE results.

This course prepares students applying for competitive universities (such as Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial, Warwick, Durham, and LSE) that require maths-based admissions tests (STEP, MAT, TMUA, PAT, ESAT) for courses like Maths, Computer Science, Physics, Engineering, and Economics.

Course Overview:

• Year 1: Focuses on Senior Maths Challenge/Kangaroo problem-solving, logic, advanced curve sketching, introductory number theory, and early admissions test questions. (1 lesson/week).
• Year 2: Focuses on advanced test questions and university interview preparation. (1–2 lessons/week).
• In the Classroom: Interactive group work and independent problem-solving, facilitated by an expert teacher.
• Assessment: Students sit their relevant university admission tests during their second year.

Note: Most universities do not require these tests. However, top-tier institutions heavily rely on them for STEM and Economics courses. Always check individual university entry requirements.

Our renowned Music and Music Technology departments offer versatile tuition, extensive performance opportunities, and vibrant community engagement.

• Diverse Performances: From grand choral projects and jazz concerts to intimate recitals, students explore all musical styles.
• Community & Collaboration: Students perform at prestigious local venues (e.g., Guildford Cathedral, Farnborough Wind Tunnels) and participate in major collaborative events.
• Bespoke & Inclusive: Music is custom-arranged every year to include as many students as possible.
• Student-Led Ensembles: In addition to official College groups, students are encouraged to form their own ensembles (such as past string quartets or brass quintets).

• Big Band: The College’s premier 50-piece jazz ensemble performing traditional standards, contemporary works, and film scores. It is open to all wind, brass, piano, drum kit, and guitar players. It ideal for advanced musicians, including those preparing for Conservatoire or Oxbridge applications. Big band recommends students have a Grade 6 standard and minimum Grade 5 required). Students without a formal Grade 5 qualification will need to pass a brief audition after enrolment.
• Chamber Choir: An elite classical vocal ensemble for experienced singers, performing challenging, smaller-scale repertoire. Open to all students. The choir has sung Evensong at major UK cathedrals (including Winchester, Salisbury, and St Paul’s) and performed internationally at landmark venues like St Mark's Basilica in Venice and Bach's churches in Leipzig.
• Chamber Orchestra: The College’s premier 25-piece ensemble, performing a dynamic range of classical and popular music from the Baroque era to modern film scores. Open to all string, wind, brass, percussion, and piano players. It is ideal for advanced musicians, including those preparing for Conservatoire or Oxbridge applications. Chamber Orchestra recommends students have a Grade 6 standard and minimum Grade 5 required). Students without a formal Grade 5 qualification will need to pass a brief audition after enrolment.
• Close Harmony Group: The Close Harmony group, formed in September 2023, is an intimate choir of sopranos, altos, tenors and basses with 2 or 3 singers per part. Styles of music span pop, close harmony and barbershop songs and is an auditioned choir, which is open to all students of the College across both academic years. 
• Contemporary Voices: A relaxed, no-audition choir open to all students and staff, performing pop, rock, and musical theatre.
• Grade V Theory:  Grade V Theory workshops provide an opportunity for all college students to receive tuition and examination entry for the ABRSM Grade V Theory qualification. Workshops are held weekly and students may enter for the examination following the successful completion of a mock sample paper.
• Instrumental and Vocal Tuition: Expert, professional tuition is available for a wide range of instruments, including brass, woodwind, strings, voice, piano, guitar, and drums. For more information regarding tuition costs, timings and availability please contact: music@farnborough.ac.uk.
• Music Programme: Designed for students targeting a music industry career, this specialised pathway develops advanced performance, composition, and professional skills. A-Level students receive free, weekly 30-minute lessons on their principal instrument or voice alongside expert coaching in stage presence. Students build extensive portfolio experience through solo and chamber performances across three high-profile ticketed concerts, trust collaborations, and prestigious venues like Guildford Cathedral. The programme also offers valuable leadership and teaching opportunities, allowing students to conduct major college ensembles and run music workshops in the community and partner schools. Furthermore, exclusive partnerships with top universities and conservatoires provide invaluable networking, joint concerts, and masterclass opportunities.

Performing Arts and Drama enrichment offers an opportunity for those that do not take a performance subject to get involved, and for those that do to deepen and extend their skills and experiences.  We offer a number of exciting opportunities including:

• Flexi Crew: A dedicated crew of 20–25 students working alongside professional technicians to handle backstage roles like stage management, sound, lighting, costume, props, and set design. Flexi-crew support major college events year-round including Christmas musicals, Spring theatre productions, music concerts, and the annual awards ceremony. Places are capped and this selection is based on a statement of interest detailing your past technical experience and motivation, which is set during the first session.
• Musical Theatre Enrichment: Open to all musical theatre lovers, this enrichment group offers the chance to perform in a full-scale ensemble production where auditions are required but everyone is guaranteed a role. During the first term, students rehearse acting, singing, and dance to prepare for the College’s productions. 
• Prospect Theatre Company: Here at the College, we run our very own theatre company called The Prospect Theatre Company. Being part of this company involves a performance in the Spring term and preparing a theatre skills workshop which we take into schools.  The skills workshop is led by students who deliver it to GCSE Drama students in the local area during the Autumn and Spring term. All students are eligible to audition for this company in September. 
• LAMDA Award (for second year students): London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art offer a short qualification in Acting. The course is a practical, one-period-a-week qualification that builds performance confidence and awards valuable UCAS points, making it ideal preparation for drama school auditions. Students select, rehearse, and perform three acting speeches for an external examiner, alongside a viva voce component evaluating their application of a chosen theatre practitioner's principles. Taught through a mix of group exercises and individual coaching, the course concludes with a practical exam, with graded results (Pass, Merit, or Distinction) delivered within six weeks.
