BTEC Certificate/Subsidiary Diploma in Sport
The award is suitable for students who have an enthusiasm for studying sport and improving sporting performance. The 1 Year course results in the award of the Certificate. Continuation into Year 2 leads to the Subsidary Diploma.
WHAT WILL I BE STUDYING ON THE COURSE?
In Year 1 (Certificate) you will study:
Unit 1: Principles of Anatomy and Physiology in Sport
The aim of this unit is to explore the structure and function of the skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular and respiratory systems and also to learn the fundamentals of the energy systems.
Unit 2: The Physiology of Fitness
This unit provides an opportunity for learners to explore the body’s response to acute exercise and how the body adapts to long-term exercise participation.
Unit 3: Assessing Risk in Sport
The aim of this unit is to make the learner explicitly aware of the vital nature of risk assessment and its management within the sports industry.
Unit 7: Fitness Testing for Sport and Exercise
The aim of this unit is to enable learners to gain an understanding of fitness testing and the importance of health screening and health monitoring tests.
In Year 2 (Subsidiary Diploma) you will study:
Unit 8: Practical Team Sports
The aim of this unit is to enable learners to explore the skills, techniques, tactics and rules of team sports through practical participation.
Or
Unit 9: Practical Individual Sports
The aim of this unit is to enable learners to explore the skills, techniques, tactics and rules of individual sports through active participation.
And two of the following three optional units:
Unit 11: Sports Nutrition
The aim of this unit is to provide a broad understanding of the importance of nutrition and hydration to a variety of sports participants.
Unit 14: Exercise, Health and Lifestyle
The aim of this unit is for learners to be able to assess the lifestyle of an individual and provide advice on lifestyle improvement.
Unit 17: Psychology for Sports Performance
The aim of this unit is to develop learners’ understanding of the psychological dimensions of sport and develop techniques to improve sporting performance.
ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS
You will also have the opportunity to study for the following industry-recognised qualifications, further improving your employability:
• Level 2 Award in Sports Leadership
• A HSE recognised First Aid Certificate
WHAT WILL I BE DOING IN LESSONS?
There are no examinations on this course and it is comprised of 100% coursework. Assignments will be based on realistic workplace situations. You will experience a variety of both practical and theory teaching methods to enhance your learning and understanding. Participation in all practical sessions is mandatory, enabling you to reach and maintain a full understanding by putting theory into practice. You will also be expected to carry out experimental type work as well as essay writing. Students of all sporting abilities can apply.
WHAT QUALIFICATIONS DO I NEED TO TAKE THE COURSE?
A good level of written English is required and therefore GCSE English Language will be an indicator of suitability for the course. Having studied GCSE PE or BTEC Sport level 2 would be advantageous but is not a prerequisite.
WHAT OTHER SUBJECTS COULD I DO WITH THIS COURSE?
The BTEC Certificate/Subsidiary Diploma in Sport combines well with all subjects. Popular combinations include: Biology, Chemistry, Psychology, Sociology, Business Studies and Leisure Studies.
AND AFTER THE COURSE?
This course focuses on your progression into industry with career specific placements available in a variety of areas including: Coaching, Sports Science, Sports Development, Fitness Instruction and Sports Management. Higher education qualifications would be beneficial if students wish to follow a career in sports therapy or teaching. The Subsidiary Diploma is equivalent to one A Level and carries a maximum of 120 UCAS points.
