S 09/16 New sixth form college regime from 1 April 2010 – appointments implications
Dr. Guy reported on the proposed designation of the College under the recently-enacted legislation which would be considered at the immediately succeeding Corporation meeting. This legislation was expected to come into force in April 2010.
Although detailed guidance was awaited, there seemed very unlikely to be any significant implications for Corporation membership or the governor search process, and the existing Instrument and Articles of Government were unlikely to be substantially modified. The host authority, in the College’s case Hampshire County Council, would assume the LSC’s responsibility for intervention.
S 09/17 Appointment of a Parent Governor, 1 November 2009 to 31 October 2011
The Committee noted that Andrew Majury had been elected as Parent Governor after an election conducted on the single transferable vote system. There had been three candidates. The votes cast, the great majority electronically, were as follows.
Andrew Majury 101 votes
Sally Cackett 18 votes
Jo Mills 16 votes
Andrew Majury had already completed his induction visit.
The current Instrument and Articles of Government had clarified the position that the Search Committee was not required formally to advise the Corporation on elective appointments although it could make proposals, for instance on the Committee(s) to which the appointee might be assigned.
DECISION
The Committee recommended to the Corporation that, subject to his formal appointment as a Parent Governor, Andrew Majury should be appointed to the Curriculum and Quality Committee.
(a) Electoral process
The Committee noted that the voter turnout had been relatively low. Consideration should be given to requiring voters in future to supply only their student offspring’s postcode, name, and date of birth. Having to provide the student number might have discouraged voting and the three remaining requirements should provide sufficient protection against electoral fraud.
The Chair closed the meeting at 4.41 pm.
