The Prospect Theatre provided the venue for a celebration of athletic success at the College on Wednesday evening as 100 students came together for the Annual Sports Awards Ceremony. Over 35 awards were made culminating in the presentation to Andrew Willis and Katie Wright of the Sportsman and Sportswoman of the year awards respectively.

Andrew, a London 2012 hopeful, is a double British record holder for the 200m Breast stroke. He said, “It is overwhelming to be the College Sportsman of the Year – I know that many other students could equally have been chosen and I am very proud.”

Katie has made a particularly strong contribution to College sport as a team sport all rounder and particularly as College Basketball captain. Katie said, “It feels brilliant to get this award – I will certainly put it on my CV because I hope it will indicate to future employers my potential as a strong team player.”

The success of the College teams has been phenomenal this year with the college 2nd XI leading the way with a second consecutive county league and cup double.  Indeed the 2nd XI picked up the prestigious Team of the Year award, seeing off very strong competition from the Men’s Swimming team who finished 2nd in the National Schools Finals in February.

The final award of the evening, The Mike Ritchie Memorial Award for Outstanding Contribution to Sport was won by the 22 students who made it through to the British College Finals at Loughborough University in April.  Of these athletes, 14 brought back medals during a weekend of sport which will live long in the memory of those involved.

Speaking at the ceremony, Head of Sport and Recreation, James Simms, said, “The whole College congratulates those who have won awards this evening and we are all indebted to the many sportsmen and sportswomen who have represented the College with such distinction in 2008 and 2009.”
