Musical Cat Fight at College
Click here for photographsMusic Scholars at Farnborough Sixth Form College delighted a packed audience, including members of the Farnborough Music Society, in the College’s Prospect Theatre with a lively and varied programme demonstrating real musicianship and maturity.
The evening began with a moving duet from Mozart's Don Giovanni by Sarah Brown, 17, of Wokingham (soprano) and Daniel Coldridge, 17, of Fleet (baritone),whose voices have matured to professional levels under guidance at the College.
New students Colin Li, 16, of Camberley (piano), Will Etheridge, 17, of Old Basing (horn), Nancy Reynolds, 16, of Binfield (violin) and Elley Beere, 16, of Farnham (piano) all gave confident and convincing performances in solo pieces before a stunning interpretation of Holst's St Paul's Suite from the College String Ensemble directed by strings teacher, Alison Holford.
After the interval, first year students Chris Mills, 16, of Hook (piano), Katy Ovens, 16 of Send (flute) and Sam Cleeve,16, of Farnborough (violin) challenged even the brilliance of second year violinists Vicky Tay, 17 of Binfield, and Josh Armstrong, 17 of Farnham, and whose respective interpretations of Monti's Czardas and Frühlingswaltzer by Shostakovich were performed with real feeling and understanding.
In the brilliant finale, sopranoists Sarah Brown and Vicky Tay, accompanied at the piano by Josh Armstrong, adopted the convincing roles of fighting cats, delighting the audience with their amusing version of Rossini's Buffo di Due Gatti.
Once again, the sixth form college students left the contented concert-goers of Farnborough wondering where Director of Music Paul Bambrough finds such talented young musicians, and how such a performance could be mounted after six short weeks of a new academic year.
