Farnborough began its preparations to host the British Olympic Team preparation camp in 2012 with the Farnborough 6 Fun Run on Sunday morning. 400 runners took to the streets to raise funds for two charities and to signal the start of a healthy Rushmoor campaign .

The Farnborough 6 Fun Run was organised by a group of 18 A-level Leisure Studies students at Farnborough Sixth Form College and included a six, a three and a one mile race. Following the downpours of Saturday, the sun shone on the event which was hailed to be a great success. The route took runners around the local streets passing along Hawley Lane, Chapel Lane, Fernhill Road, Cherrywood Road and Sand Hill with local residents and children cheering along the fun runners who raised thousands of pounds for the two nominated charities, WheelPower and Ghana Link.

Jemma Siemak, 18, of Church Crookham, was chairperson of the organising group. She said, “When we started this process we knew nothing about organising fun runs but in six months we have organised a community event which has done so much good”.

Jemma added, “There were so many people running and they have raised so much for charity! It has been brilliant.”

One of the runners was College Principal, Dr John Guy who had promised to contribute £50 to the charities for any student who completed the six mile route faster than he could run the three mile route. Dr Guy said, “They are about 40 years more youthful than I am, so I was a bit anxious how much it was going to cost!”

On the day, only one student came in ahead of the Principal, 17 year old Tom Bowerman of Farnborough. Tom has established the Farnborough 6 record at 33.11 minutes.

The event looks set to become an established part of Rushmoor community events and already the College is planning the 2009 run.

James Simms, Head of PE at the College, said, “The students who organised the fun run have set a very high standard.   Building on their success, I am sure that The Farnborough 6 Fun Run will be even more successful in 2009 and in 2012 we hope the run will be joined by the British Olympic Team “.
