Performing Arts Students transform Theatre into Ballroom
Samba, Can-Can and Cha Cha Cha
Students at the Farnborough Sixth Form College hosted their own version of Strictly Come Dancing in the College’s Prospect Theatre as part of a charity week organised by performing arts students which raised over £1,300.
Matt Sheppard, Senior Curriculum Manager, hosted the event with a stunning impersonation of Bruce Forsyth, complete with singing routine and frequent dance shuffles.
The four final couples produced a variety of dances with professional expertise and colourful costumes. Twins Emily Daly-Mackenzie and Sophie Daly-Mackenzie, 18, of Camberley danced the can-can, a physically demanding Music hall routine with real verve and energy and Holly Harmes and Scott Mcdonald, both 17, and from Blackwater, danced the cha-cha-cha, a Latin American Dance of Cuban origin, with commitment, rhythm and passion.
But the judges narrowed the field to two couples in the final dance-off. Eventual winners were Emma Browne, 16, of Farnborough and Emma Rickwood, 18, of Aldershot who danced the cha-cha-cha to applause from the packed audience, adding innovative individual style to the carefully choreographed duet.
Runners up were Nigel Beard, 17, of Farnborough and Ayesha Hassan, 17, of Fleet whose interpretation of the Samba, a lively rhythmical dance of Brazil, was passionate and energetic, with lifts and style.
Matt Sheppard said, “All the students have worked incredibly hard over the past few weeks on the preparation of this project, but the single overriding characteristic of the event has been their amazing professionalism in organisation”.
Proud subject leader for performing arts, Emily Burke, said, “This is a real example of the enormous charitable contribution that the students at the College have made to the local community and beyond”.
