Outstanding preparation of students for entry to Cambridge University

The Cambridge University Admissions office has confirmed that Farnborough Sixth Form College has become one of its top 10 providers of undergraduates for the 2008 entry round.  In terms of the absolute numbers of offers made by the University, Farnborough is ninth in the country.

However, in terms of the proportion of successful applicants, it is fourth in the country.  The average national success rate of applications to Cambridge is about 25% - one in four applicants being offered a place.  For the Farnborough students, this year, it was 44% - bettered by only three other schools.

Principal Dr John Guy said, "Admissions tutors from across the University of Cambridge seem to have recognised the great potential of our students.  Many of them undertook an Extended Project which the College has pioneered and the additional breadth and depth of their knowledge seems to have given them an edge over other candidates".

The College has worked hard to encourage students to apply to both Oxford and Cambridge Universities but it has never before broken through into being one of the country's most successful institutions for Cambridge entrance which for many years has been perceived as being the preserve of top flight independent schools.

On March 27, as part of the outstanding Oxbridge preparation programme, the College will welcome Dr Kirsten Dickers, Admissions Tutor for Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, and Dr Anne Mullen, Admissions Tutor for St Anne's College, Oxford, for an admissions conference open to first year students of the College and their parents.

Mrs Helen Diffenthal, Director of Careers and Guidance, said, "This is a very important meeting in the life of the College and marks the beginning of the 2009 entry round.  We will be expecting a theatre-full of over 300 students and parents and we are very pleased that once again Oxbridge academics are coming to the College to encourage our students to apply".
