PE students from the College have planned a six mile fun run for the Farnborough Community on Sunday
The Farnborough 6 Community event
Students from The Sixth Form College Farnborough have taken on the daunting task of establishing a major community sporting event: ‘The Farnborough 6 Fun Run’. It is 10 years since Farnborough’s last fun run and the students have decided to re-establish it to promote the health and fitness of the area. It is expected that up to 400 runners will take to the streets of Farnborough on Sunday 30 March 2008.
Runners will have the chance either to run a six mile race or, if six miles is a little too far, to run 1 mile within the College grounds. Half the proceeds of the event will go towards the officially nominated charities including ‘Ghana Link’ (a College fund to develop links with its new partner school in Ghana) and ‘Wheel Power (British Wheelchair Sport)’. The remaining funds will be used to establish the fun run in 2009.
Chairperson of the organising group is Jemma Siemak, 18, of Church Crookham. She said: “It is about time that Farnborough once again had a community event like a fun run and we are proud to provide an opportunity for the community to show its spirit”.
Jemma added: “We don’t just want to appeal to experienced runners - this is an opportunity for people to get on their feet for a morning and take part in something exciting. All ages will be welcome and there will be fantastic entertainment for kids”.
Christine Smith, ex-teacher at Oak Farm Community School, believes that the Farnborough 6 Fun Run will be a great success. She said: “When I used to organise the Oak Farm Fun Run the entire community would come together and contribute to a fantastic festival of sport and community spirit. I am delighted that the sixth form college students are committed to making this happen once again”.
The Farnborough 6 Fun Run will honour the route used in the 80s and 90s but the fact that it is being organised by students is unique. Head of PE James Simms has great confidence in the students’ organisational skills. He said: “We should remember that these talented young people taken on a huge challenge and have performed with distinction thus far. This is a genuine educational experience and the PE department is proud to be working on with this major community event”.
Entry fees are £8 for The Farnborough 6 and £2 for the one mile fun run and application forms and instructions are available from the College website www.farnboroughsfc.ac.uk.
