College students win best overall team in Rotary Public Speaking Competition

Best overall public speaking team
Students from The Sixth Form College Farnborough were judged the overall winners in the Aldershot and District round of the Rotary Youth Speaks competition hosted by the Aldershot Rotary Club at the Rushmoor Council Chambers this week .
The College team, consisting of Georgia Stilwell (Chairperson), Simon Wood (Main Speaker) and Marisa Barnard (Vote of thanks) gave a presentation entitled, ‘We’ve Discovered the Secret of Life’, discussing the great benefits genetics has given society, and questioning why the public perception of genetics is so negative.
Simon Wood said, “We were really pleased to win. We have all been engaged with public speaking for the last five years and it was great to retain our title”.
Six teams entered the competition in total, including Hawley Place, Court Moor and Ash Manor Technology College, but the College students defended the title they held last year. Georgia Stilwell said, “The competition is really enjoyable and the Council Chamber provides a great platform to speak from”.
Marisa Barnard said, “It was nice to see our hard work paying off and now we will be going on to represent the area in the regional finals”.
Vanessa Norton-Edwards, tutor in psychology at the College and adviser to the team, said after the competition, “The students were poised, confident and secure in their presentation against strong opposition and the College is immensely proud of their achievement.”
