Students in £1800 boycott of Jeans for Genes
Farnborough Sixth Form College is often commended on the standard of its teaching and learning but, alongside study, students at the College also dedicate time and energy to charitable events. But in a novel twist, students decided to boycott Jeans for Genes day.
Tutorial sessions in the week leading up to Jeans for Genes outlined the importance of research into genetic disorders in children. But as wearing jeans is the usual College uniform, students were encouraged to take a different approach, by boycotting jeans! Instead the Students’ Association encouraged fellow students to come to College dressed in pyjamas – and a weird and wonderful collection of nightwear from nighties to dressing gowns emerged!
18 year old student Charities Officer, Hattie Leach, masterminded a variety of activities including a mass pillow fight in one of the college’s three cafeterias while student Jeans Police toured the College during breaks issuing fines to all those who were seen in jeans. Meanwhile, an army of students wielding buckets harassed everyone else for any loose change to donate.
In total, the College managed to raise an astonishing £1800 for the charity, a record for any single day in the College’s history. 17 year old Tamsyn Pack said, “I think charity days are a really great way of raising money, whilst still having fun. Jeans For Genes day was especially good because everyone got really involved”.
James Hawkins, 18, the students’ press officer said, ¨There are many more charity events on the college calendar, including Breast Cancer Awareness and Children in Need, and we will keep trying to beat our previous records for collections”.
