Minister acclaims College’s work
Students and staff at Farnborough Sixth Form College had a double reason to celebrate last week. Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector named the College in her annual report as one formally designated as outstanding and Minister of State for Further Education, Bill Rammell MP, celebrated the work of the College in developing green curriculum materials through its work with a secondary school in Ghana.
College students Becky Cagney, 18, of Farnborough, Mike Eager, 17, of Camberley, Becky Glass, 17 of Bracknell and Rosemary Pritchard, 17 of Fleet, accompanied College Principal, Dr John Guy, to the launch of a new Green Colleges Publication opened by the Minister in Westminster.
Mr Rammell said, “I am delighted that colleges, as demonstrated by this publication, have proved their commitment and ingenuity in establishing sustainable development into their buildings, the curriculum and their work with employers and local communities.”
He took particular interest in the work of Farnborough’s students in developing curriculum materials to promote water conservation. Becky Cagney told the minister that she had been part of a 15-strong group of students who had visited the College’s partner school in Ghana last June.
Becky said, “The Minister was very interested that we had worked with the Ghanaian students to develop new materials which we are now using throughout our college and also in the school in Ghana”.
Dr Guy said, “We are taking the issues of sustainability very seriously in the College and our link with Ghana has given an important new dimension to the thinking of students and staff”.
“It is an example of our desire to broaden and challenge the views of students which Ofsted found particularly interesting”, he added.
