Moving-On Day is a great success
Students from Farnborough Sixth Form College were introduced to a host of different occupations and professions at their annual Moving-On Day last week when the College played host to over 100 visitors, from Architects to Zoologists.
Among the visitors was Dr Joanna Higgins, herself a former student at the College, who graduated in medicine at the University of Birmingham last year. Joanna is now on a specialist training route to become a surgeon, and she brought with her a series of artificial arms with sutures and forceps for students to try their hand at stitching.
Philip Sajik, 17, of Camberley, who is studying A level Biology, Chemistry, Physics and History at the College, said, “Joanna gave us a lot of information about what it is like to undertake medical degree programme which is really useful because I want to be a doctor”.
Philip added, “It was also good to get some hands-on experience and stitching an arm was a lot more difficult than I had imagined – it’s a good job the arm was not attached to a patient!”
Moving-On Day is the brain-child of Mrs Sandra Doel, Director of Careers and Guidance at the College. She said, “It is very important that we give our students the opportunity to understand more about the occupations and professions that are open to them, either after College or on graduating from university, and hearing about them at first hand from the people doing the job is much more meaningful than reading about the job on the internet”.
Flt. Lt. Nikki Frost represented the RAF at the event. She said, “I was amazed at the range of professions and careers which the College had gathered together and also at the range of good questions which the students posed in the seminars”.
Flt. Lt. Frost added, “I wish my school had arranged something similar when I did my A levels!”
Alex McCabe from the University of Exeter said, “It was a really worthwhile event because the students seemed well-prepared and we are pleased to invest time in visiting a College with so many potential undergraduates”.
College Principal, Dr John Guy, said, “This was the biggest careers event that the College has ever mounted and we were delighted by the response from local employers, gap year organisations and from universities across the UK who all came to share their expertise with our students”.
