College students win top Design Awards
Five students from Farnborough Sixth Form College have won recognition in a national design competition run by The Institute of Packaging. In the annual Starpack Awards Competition, designed primarily for industrial designers but including a section for students, the young designers were challenged to develop a Back-to-school pack.Farnborough Sixth Form College encourages students to solve real-life problems, as though they were working in business, and the Institute of Packaging awards provides a competitive environment to test skills and imagination. However, the College did not expect to do so well in the 2007 competition.
David Riley, 17, of Crowthorne, Jonathan Talbot-Hammond, 17, of Farnham, Judith Falkner, 16, of Fleet, David Nee, 17, of Frimley, and Tom Cornick, 16, of Fleet, won five awards in all, one gold, three silver and one bronze respectively.
David Riley was the most successful entrant in the country in his category and was given an additional award from the Packaging Society for the best supporting folder. The students have had their designs published on a DVD to celebrate their work and their designs can also be seen on the Institute of Packaging website.
Speaking at the awards ceremony held at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham,
Bob Dunn, Head of Design at the College, said, “This was a tremendous haul by our students and the department is proud to have won so many awards”.
