London Mini-Marathon Champion Stephanie Twell receives award
Stephanie Twell, 17, of Aldershot and Farnham District Athletics Club, was honoured by her College this week after winning the London Mini-Marathon for the second year in succession. And the award was presented by double Olympic Gold medallist, Dame Kelly Holmes, when she visited Farnborough Sixth Form College on Wednesday to open the new Dame Kelly Holmes Sports Centre.
Stephanie, who is taking her A levels at the College, was presented with an engraved silver platter for her outstanding athletics achievements whilst at the College.
Head of PE James Simms said, “She is not only a dedicated athlete giving so much of her time to training but she is also committed to her studies and determined to achieve success”.
Stephanie said, “Winning the London Mini-Marathon was extra special because it meant a lot to retain my title of 2006”.
“The race atmosphere was amazing and only inspires me to come back as a senior to try to win the whole 26.2 miles!”, she added.
Dame Kelly said that Stephanie was one of Britain’s best young athletes and she and other senior athletes would do all they could to encourage her to develop her talents to the full.
After receiving the award, Stephanie said, “It was such an honour to be recognised for outstanding athletic achievement by my College but it was really special to receive the award from Kelly who is someone I utterly admire for her hard work, passion and determination”.
“Kelly Holmes represents such inspiration for young middle-distance athletes and I am particularly touched that she has expressed belief in me!”, Stephanie added.
College Principal, Dr John Guy, said, “Kelly Holmes is a wonderful role model for Stephanie – but Stephanie herself is a role model to us all for her wonderful achievements to date, her ambition to succeed further, and her modesty - which together make her a very special young woman of whom the entire College is proud”.
