Students vote for new team in record turn-out

Seventeen year old Muhammad Saqib, of Fernhill Road, Farnborough, formerly of Cove School, has been elected to the prestigious role of Student President at Farnborough Sixth Form College. He will lead an 12-strong committee of students which plays a significant role in the development of the Beacon College, recognised as one of the country's leading sixth form colleges.

Muhammad said, "It's a fantastic feeling to be elected President of such an excellent student body as we have at Farnborough Sixth Form College. I look forward to a year of even more success in the next year". Mohammad, is studying Economics, German, Mathematics and Business Studies at AS level at the College.

Muhammad's Vice President is Tom Morley, of Fleet, who is studying English, Law, Music Technology and Drama and Theatre Studies. A former student of Court Moor School, Tom sees his role as supporting the President and the rest of the committee. He said, "I am really pleased to have been elected and hope that I will fulfil all my responsibilities for the good of the College".

Each committee member has a particular responsibility and this year the new post of Environmental Officer was created, won by 17 year old Rosemary Pritchard. Rosemary, of Church Crookham, is studying Biology, Chemistry, French, German and History. She said, "I am looking forward to working with the College to develop more sustainable approaches to the running of the College and trying to reduce the carbon footprint".

Speaking after the election, College Principal, Dr John Guy, said, "Everybody took a lively interest in the elections and 2216 students voted, a massive 78% turn-out. The voting was very close but recounts were not necessary because it was all done electronically on the College computer system".

Dr Guy added, "This represents the modern face of democracy, which I am delighted to say, is alive and well among the young people studying in the College".

President Muhammad Saqib said, "Nearly everybody in the College voted in our elections - it would be good to think that the electorate in the coming local elections will beat our turn-out!".
