Farnborough Sixth Form College tops Southern England table
Farnborough Sixth Form College achieved the best results out of all colleges in the south of England, according to the league tables published yesterday (11 January 2006) by the government. According to the tables, the average A level points score per student of 1002.3 makes it the top college in Hampshire, Surrey, Sussex and the whole of southern Britain, and second in the entire country.
College Principal Dr John Guy said, "This success is entirely due to an exceptionally dedicated teaching and support staff team, and to students who really support each other to study".
The Government’s examination regulator, Dr Ken Boston, presented the A level certificates to students at a ceremony in the College last month. He said, “There is no finer institution in the country at which you could have studied for your A levels”.
Dr Boston added, “Farnborough Sixth Form College is widely recognised for its innovative approaches to improving teaching and learning, including action research by teachers which has been reported nationally”.
Dr Guy heard the news of the College’s success whilst attending an advisory meeting with the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Gordon Brown, and the Education Secretary, Alan Johnson, in Downing Street on Thursday morning. He said, “Such is the significance of the students’ achievements that we are regularly invited to policy development meetings to enable the good practice of colleagues in the College to inform the national strategy”.
Last year, over 800 students moved on to universities across the country making the College one of Britain's most significant sources of undergraduates. The top universities are keen to accept Farnborough students, knowing that their preparation for higher education and independent study is among the best available.
