Hundreds of students and their parents packed Farnborough Sixth Form College on Monday evening for the Annual Awards evening. Such was the popularity of the event that the College Media department videoed the ceremony live from the Sports Hall to the Prospect Theatre for the overflow audience.
The principal guest was the National President of the NUS, Ms Kat Fletcher. Before presenting their certificates and awards she told the students that she, herself, had been collecting her A level certificates only a few years earlier.
“If anyone had told me then that in five years time I would be National President of the largest student organisation in the world, I would never have believed them!”, she said.
“So get involved and be active in your universities and colleges in order to encourage the development of excellent teaching and learning for all students”, she added.
“But you have been extremely fortunate to be at this College and your results are brilliant!”, she told the audience.
Earlier, College Principal Dr John Guy had welcomed the students and their parents back to the College. “We are extremely proud of all you have achieved, not only in your examinations but also in the enrichment activities you undertook”.
Dr Guy paid particular tribute to the many students who had been awarded College Travel Scholarships to undertake voluntary work abroad and he wished Latoyah Bucknall, 18, of Farnham and Rachael Elliott, 19, of Farnborough, well as they were about to set off to teach for three months in Ghana and Vietnam respectively. “These are life-changing experiences and we admire your commitment and selfless approach to life”, he said.
The Dell Student of the Year award for the most outstanding achievement was made by Dell’s Director of Software and Peripherals, Mrs Maggie Willis.
She said, “Dell UK is proud to be associated with this Beacon College but it is extremely difficult to identify just one winner to be Dell Student of the Year”.
The award was made to Laura Murkin, 18, of Farnborough for her outstanding A level results which included two distinctions in her advanced extension awards and being named as one of the top ten candidates in the country in her Government and Politics Examination. Mrs Willis presented Laura with a top of the range Dell Inspiron laptop computer.
Speaking afterwards, Laura who is now reading English at Magdalene College, Cambridge, said “I am astonished to have won the Dell award - I am just speechless but very happy!
