14 drama students from Farnborough Sixth Form College have just returned from Rushmoor’s Twin Town of Sulechow in Poland where they devised and performed a theatrical production with students from the town’s High School, Liceum Ogólnoksztalcace. They were accompanied by teachers Rebecca Lewis and Matt Sheppard as part of the College’s enrichment activities.
The students performed pieces based on the folk heritage of each country which culminated with a maypole dance as an enduing feature of England’s folk traditions. The maypole was improvised with 16 year old Emma Hayward from Fleet sitting on the shoulders of 17 year old David Phelan from Farnborough, and Polish and English students covering them in a web of coloured ribbons.
The Farnborough students arrived in heavy snow and stayed with Polish families. They were overwhelmed with hospitality and kindness, and enjoyed traditional Polish food.
17 year old Dominique Barretto of Frimley said, “The family I stayed with were really kind to me. Whenever we went anywhere they wouldn’t let me pay for anything!” 16 year old Matthew Cuzner from Sandhurst added, “All the Polish families were really welcoming but it was difficult to eat the seven meals a day they kept serving me!”
The Principal of Farnborough Sixth Form College, Dr John Guy, attended the performance held in the school hall in Sulechow. He said, “Twinning between towns must become owned by the young people if it is to be at all meaningful and the support of the Rushmoor Town Twinning Committee has enabled this strong link between our two educational institutions to develop”.
Dr Guy added, “I was immensely proud of the students who were wonderful ambassadors of both the College and of Rushmoor”.
The students from Poland will be returning in the summer to stage a joint production in Farnborough.
