Student wins prestigious award
Nick Savage, a second year student at Farnborough Sixth Form College, has won a prestigious award presented by Kaplan, one of the world’s leading providers of on-line education.
The Kaplan Accountancy Scholarship is an annual programme giving students the opportunity to receive free training courses, worth over £15,000, towards a range of accountancy qualifications. Nick, from Woking, is completing A levels in Accounting, Business Studies, Law and IT. He chose to pursue this route into employment rather than go to university: ‘I knew finance and business was the career for me and found out about Kaplan from the college. I applied for the 4-day summer school in Reading, gaining a real in-depth understanding of alternative routes into accounting and finance.’
Nick underwent a rigorous selection process with Kaplan: ‘The interview was tough! I spent hours before finalising my presentation and planning potential questions that could be fired at me so I was well-prepared.’
Tom Hartgill, Centre Manager for Kaplan Financial in Reading, said in making the presentation: ‘Nick is a deserving winner of the 2012 award. I wish him the best of luck on his journey towards becoming a fully qualified accountant; we will be with him every step of the way. I have no doubts that he will have a long and successful career.’
Nick’s career will shortly begin in earnest following the publication of A level results in August. Following his triumph with Kaplan, Nick secured employment with the accountancy firm RSM Tenon to work in their Basingstoke office.
College Principal, Simon Jarvis, said: ‘Nick is a brilliant example to all youngsters that there are real alternatives to the traditional route through Higher Education. The guidance he received from his Personal Tutor, Susan Fitzpatrick, was invaluable in helping Nick understand his wider options. He has been able to compete successfully with the cream of his peer group to secure this fantastic award from Kaplan. I have no doubt that he has a glittering career in front of him.’
