Art - Graphic Design

All Art and Design courses provide a stimulating and exciting exploration into the varied art specialisms.  You will develop ideas by researching into other artists and be encouraged to examine the world around you visually.  You will work through a variety of techniques and learn to work with appropriate media, materials and processes.  As an Art and Design student, you will be expected to write about your work, to express personal, creative ideas and produce final outcomes using a range of approaches and methods.  You will primarily develop your art in A3 Workbooks; final pieces are produced in a wide range of sizes.  It is possible to study two Art and Design subjects as part of your learning programme.

WHAT WILL I BE STUDYING ON THE COURSE?
This course will introduce you to the fundamentals of design principles and visual communication giving you a strong foundation of skills. You will also be given the freedom to explore and experiment with a wider range of traditional and digital techniques and processes.

Within the subject of Graphic Design you are encouraged to explore a range of disciplines such as illustration, advertising, packaging, branding, editorial design, animation and web design.   You will learn and develop a variety of techniques within drawing, illustration, laser cutting, print making, collage, paper making and engineering, textiles and photography. The graphics classrooms are well equipped; there is a computer for each student including industry standard software with the latest Adobe Creative Suite, which you will be taught on the course.

WHAT WILL I BE DOING IN LESSONS?
You will be introduced to contemporary and historical designers. You will develop a strong foundation of skills in visual communication early on, typography, layout skills, idea generation techniques, the design process and how to problem solve. You will learn to produce successful and imaginative outcomes in response to both set and self-initiated project briefs and as your skills develop you will have more freedom to explore your own interests in Graphic Design

HOW WILL THE COURSE BE ASSESSED?
The AS units will be:
·         Coursework assignments (50%)
·         Practical exam (50%)

The A2 units will be:
·         Coursework and personal study (50%)
·         Practical exam (50%)

WHAT QUALIFICATIONS DO I NEED TO TAKE THE COURSE?
You should have at least a grade C in GCSE Art and Design, Graphic Design or a Design Technology subject and English Language. However, students who are keen to study A Level Graphic Design but do not have C grades in these subjects will be considered on an individual basis in September. For such students, evidence of art work is useful for us to see at enrolment. Enthusiasm, a willingness to work hard and persevere with work are very important, as is spending time out of lessons building up and further developing your work.

WHAT OTHER SUBJECTS COULD I DO WITH GRAPHIC DESIGN?
Graphic Design can compliment and be combined well with a wide range of subjects depending on the student’s interests and intended specialism.

AND AFTER THE COURSE?
Art and Design Foundation or a degree in an Art and Design subject (Graphic Design/ Illustration/Advertising/Animation/Games Design/Architecture).
