GCSE English Language (Specification B)

If you do not have a grade C in GCSE English Language you will be required to retake in your first year as part of your individual programme of study.

AQA GCSE English Language
English Language GCSE is a qualification that proves you have achieved a certain standard in speaking, reading and writing the English language. A grade C (or above) is required for most advanced or higher level courses in all subjects and many jobs. We offer the opportunity to resit English Language GCSE if you didn’t gain a C. Some students who need a grade B or above for a higher education course also re-sit with us.

There are 3 units:

  • Unit 1 Understanding and producing non-fiction texts
    a 2 hour examination which will have 2 sections testing reading and writing. This will be worth 40% of the total GCSE marks.
     
  • Unit 2 Speaking and Listening.
    You will be assessed on 3 equally weighted activities: presenting, discussing and listening and role playing. This will be worth 20% of the total GCSE marks.
     
  • Unit 3 Understanding spoken and written texts and writing creatively.This section is assessed by Controlled Assessments performed under exam conditions. (This unit replaces coursework).
    There are 3 sections:
    Part a) Extended reading
    This is the literature part of the course you will study one text and choose a writing task from the task bank of published titles for the year you are studying the unit. You will be writing about an aspect of the text you have been studying, such as a central character or looking at some of the themes of the text.
    Part b) Creative writing
    You will choose 2 tasks from the published task bank.
    Part c) Spoken language study
    You will be looking at how spoken language has evolved in response to changes in society and technology and how this process relates to identity and cultural diversity.
