BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate in Music (Music Technology)

The BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate offers an engaging and contemporary programme for those who wish to pursue & establish a career in the music industry. An excellent alternative to A-level Music Technology, if you’re looking to get into the Music Industry – this is the course for you!
 
WHAT WILL I BE STUDYING?
You will study a total of 4 units, broken down into the following focus topics:
  •  Working in the Music Industry
  •  Professional Development in the Music Industry
  •  Exploring Computer Systems Used By Musicians
  •  Producing a Music Recording 
There is a clear vocational emphasis within this course; students will learn essential & transferable skills including the inner workings of the contemporary Music Industry & related career paths, the planning & completion of full band studio recording sessions, extensive use of music software programmes through MIDI programming & re-mixing audio.Your knowledge and understanding of different aspects of the Music Industry will also be developed through guest speakers and visits.
 
WHAT WILL I BE DOING IN LESSONS?
You will be carrying out a number of activities such as group work, individual research, practical activities (such as mixing, recording, composing) using music technology and presenting collated information. Your assignment work will focus on contemporary music industry related topics and will involve research and design work, presenting ideas and the production of final mixes. Your tutor will help you in managing your workload.
 
HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?
You will be required to produce a portfolio of assignments. Each time you complete an assignment, you will receive points and grades as well as written feedback from your tutor. When you have successfully completed your internal assessments, you will be awarded a final grade of Pass, Merit or Distinction.
 
WHAT QUALIFICATIONS DO I NEED TO TAKE THIS COURSE?
  • A standard of literacy & numeracy supported by a general education equivalent to four GCSEs at grade D-G
    OR
  • A BTEC Level 1 qualification in Music or related vocational area
 WHAT CAN I TAKE ALONGSIDE THE BTEC LEVEL 2 EXTENDED CERTIFICATE COURSE?
Students can take additional one year courses such as a GCSE, BTEC course or an AS level.

AND AFTER THE COURSE?
You can continue your studies on an Advanced level course within the College or elsewhere (Music Technology A-levels), or focus on a specific area of the Music Industry and attend a specialist Further/Higher Education music course studying Performance, Composition, Music Production etc. You could combine employment with job related training and gain further experience (studio work etc.)
